Key issues facing Rio+20 By MARTIN KHOR

There will be no major breakthroughs in tackling global crises at Rio+20 but it can still be a success if the leaders can agree to reaffirm old commitments and launch some modest initiatives.

THIS week, up to 100,000 people are streaming into Rio de Janeiro for the year’s biggest international event – the UN Conference on Sustainable Development to be held on June 13-22.

It is more popularly known as the Rio+20 Summit, to commemorate the landmark Earth Summit of 1992, which placed the environmental crisis into the mainstream of political life.

Green economy: Does it include us?

Datuk Dr Goh Ban Lee

TWO important events relating to the environment take place this month. Today is World Environment Day (WED), and the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development will be held in Rio de Janeiro from June 20-22.

A day for positive environmental action, the origin of WED can be traced to 1972 when members of the UN met in Stockholm for the Conference on Human Environment. It has been a landmark event and spawned numerous inter-governmental forums in which global environmental issues are discussed with a view to taking corrective action.

New international initiative on peat and climate change mitigation

International initiative on peat and climate change mitigation

Peatlands store tremendous amounts of carbon. However, when they are drained and used – mainly for agriculture, grazing and forestry – peatlands become significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Peatlands drainage and peat fires are responsible for almost one-quarter of carbon emissions from the land use sector.

To address this situation, FAO and Wetlands International have launched the global ‘Organic soils and peatlands climate change mitigation initiative’.  The Initiative is an informal network of organizations and people committed to reducing emissions from peatlands and safeguarding the other vital ecosystem services peatlands provide.

WORLD OCEANS DAY: 8TH JUNE 2012

DATE: Fri 08/06/12

LOCATION: Global
The world’s oceans play a key role for life on Earth. According to the UN, they are “the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe, [as well as] a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere.”

In the past few decades, the threats from pollution, overfishing and other forms of exploitation to marine habitats have increased dramatically.

World Oceans Day was first introduced in 1992 to raise awareness of the crucial role the sea plays as sources of food, oxygen and medicine. It was officially recognized by the United Nations (UN) in 2008 and is observed on June 8 each year.

Numerous events are held around the world to mark World Oceans Day. These included photo contests, fossil hunting walks, demonstrations, and concerts. Different themes are assigned to every World Oceans Day. In 2012, the theme is “Youth: The Next Wave for Change.”
