MY Garden Birdwatch 2012

Celebrate World Environment Day by running a 30-minute survey in your garden, once a year — that’s all it takes for you to contribute to MY Garden Birdwatch.

MY GARDEN BIRDWATCH is a non-profit project run by the Bird Conservation Council (BCC) of the Malaysian Nature Society and sustained by volunteers of various backgrounds who care for birds and their habitat.

The programme encourages counters to spend 30 minutes on 2 or 3 June 2012 in their own gardens, surveying common birds. For more information, go to

Introduced in 2010, this national project is organised under the Malaysian Nature Society’s Bird Conservation Council and seeks to:

  1. raise awareness about garden birds
  2. track and monitor their numbers across the country

Conceived after a similar initiative in the UK, the Big Garden Birdwatch, one of the world’s largest wildlife surveys, MYGB hopes that the data collected over a period of time will help better understanding about bird (and wildlife) populations in Malaysia. Specifically, this will tell us which birds are thriving or diminishing, how they are adapting to environmental changes, etc. These are all important indicators of the health of our environment.

The project will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of June. On either of those dates, those interested in participating are required to spend 30 minutes at one spot in a park, garden or playground, observing and jotting down the birds that they see. Count times are from 7-11am, and 4-6pm when birds are most active. They then submit their data onto the MYGB website <> by the 17th of June, after which we will tabulate, analyse and release the results.

The great part about this activity is that anyone can participate; regular birders, novice birders, young and old. (To facilitate this process, we have prepared a downloadable pictorial guide and a FAQ section on our website.)

If you’d like to help, you can:

“The Malaysian Nature Society’s annual MY Garden Birdwatch survey will take place in early June. We welcome those keen to learn about garden birds and conservation to join us. See <> for details. A mock count activity will be conducted in Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur at 8am, on the 19th and 27th of May. Participation is free of charge but subject to confirmation by emailing: <>.”

  • Tweet when you are doing/have done the survey including what you saw, what you learnt…

Hope this information suffices.
