SHAH ALAM (May 3): The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah on Thursday called on housing developers in the state to set aside funds for greening of the environment.

He said the existence of green areas as a key component in a housing area was crucial for the overall development of Selangor.

“It has to be ascertained that the location of the green area is strategic and practical for residents to go and carry out recreation activities.

“A good example of a housing area is one that is safe, clean, the people live in harmony and unity among the people of all races.

“Tree planting for greening is also in support of the initiative to save the environment, that is towards having a green and sustainable environment,” said the Sultan when launching “Trees To Green”, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project by I&P Group Sdn Bhd at Alam Impian here on Thursday.

Also present were Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, I & P Group chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, its managing director Datuk Jamaludin Osman and Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) director-general Datuk Dr Abd Latif Mohmod.

The Sultan also hoped that greening of the environment would be made a main agenda by authorities in the state.

He said the public should also play their role by helping to maintain the cleanliness of public parks and their homes.

Sultan Selangor said developers, industry operators and members of the public should not cut down trees as they were valuable to ensure ecological stability and protect the environment.

He hoped that Shah Alam could develop into a “City in the Park”, where its beauty would not be gauged only through physical development, but its ability to provide a conducive environment for the people.

Under this “Trees To Green” initiative, more than 1,500 trees from about 50 species, were planted at Taman Idaman, Alam Impian by I&P Group and RIM in an effort to turn the housing area into a mini-forest. — Bernama
