RAWANG: A new recycling centre was opened at Kampung Datuk Lee Kim Sai last Sunday in a bid to encourage villagers to recycle for the sake of the environment.
The centre was launched by Rawang assemblyperson Gan Pei Nei during the “Perlindungan Alam Sekitar. Hijaukan Rawang” event held in conjunction with Earth Day 2012.
“Our Earth is often hit by calamity due to climate change and global warming.
“So it’s our responsibility to look after our environment to ensure there is a balance,” said Gan.
About 80 villagers attended the event, which was both educational for the children and informative for the parents who do not know the benefits of recycling.
Gan also handed over three recycling bins, purchased by the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS), to representatives from the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).
She hoped the villagers will learn to separate plastic bottles, empty tins, papers and cardboard boxes into the new bins.
“Villagers are also encouraged to send their recyclables to the new recycling centre which is situated right outside the JKKK office.
“I’m confident that this campaign will raise awareness among the villagers and teach them how to recycle and reuse unwanted materials instead of throwing them away.” she said.
