10:10 Pendant – The Making

Maya Karin showing the right way to tie the plastic bags together

We have started the “No Plastic Bag Day” campaign in Selangor since January 2010. Retailers will not provide free plastic bags for purchases on every Saturday and will charge RM0.20 for every pieces of plastic bags insisted by the customers.

To engage with the school children in the state, a recycling awareness program with celebrity Maya Karin was launched in Klang Valley, involving 10 primary schools with over 20,000 students. Students were required to collect used plastic bags from their home and tie them to form a long string of plastic bags. They then ‘roll’ them into a huge orb, similar to rolling a yarn of wool.

The pendant and the plastic bag

On the 31 July 2010, we hosted a gathering of all the completed 10 orbs in Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil. A grand total of 680kg plastic bags were collected in a form of orbs, some as tall as the students themselves. The efforts of the children were rewarded with a day filled with fun and triumph feeling on their achievements.

Throughout the month of August and September, the orbs were brought to various shopping malls and LRT stations to be exhibited publicly. It is exhibited at 1Utama Shopping Mall, Subang Parade Shopping Mall, AEON Mahkota Cheras Mall, 3 LRT Stations (Ampang Park, Kerinchi & Kelana Jaya) and at the lobby of Selangor’s State Secretary Building, demonstrating the commitment to promote recycling effort in the state.

After the exhibition, the plastic bag orbs were taken into a recycling centre and to e melted back into HDPE pallets, raw material to the plastic industry. It is then produced into a 10:10 Selangor Pendant, using the injection molding method. This is not merely recycling, instead this demonstrates how materials can be UPCYCLED, or to be moved up the value chain.

This pendant is designed to support the 10:10 Selangor – Climate Change Awareness Campaign. The HDPE from the plastic bags are upcycled and the packaging of the pendant is printed on recycled paper.
