PETALING JAYA: Bandar Sri Damansara Residents’ Association (BSDRA) has won the coveted title as the best neighbourhood here for 2010.
The grand prize winner for the Petaling Jaya Sustainable Community Award 2010 walked away with a development grant of RM50,000 and two trophies, including a challenge trophy and a certificate.

The prize was presented on Tuesday by Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to BSDRA president Ravindran Raman Kutty, witnessed by PJ mayor Datuk Roslan Sakiman.

Said Ravindran: “I am truly elated with this achievement. This is a team effort made possible by the committee, residents and stakeholders of key services to ensure the smooth running of the township.

“In 2005, we were the runners-up. This time round, we managed to impress the judges through our diligence, sweat and teamwork.”

Ravindran said the participating RAs and RTs were judged on five criteria, including impact on physical environment, economic and social development, cost-cutting measures and smart partnership effort.

“I think we beat the other 17 competitors for this prestigious award because we fulfilled the criteria laid out with activities and programmes organised.

“Among the activities we organised for our area were weekly recycling programmes, where three percent of recyclable materials here were recycled as well as our good security system, that contributed to a 90 percent drop in crimes.”

Looking forward, Ravindran said the association would step up its efforts for the community.

“We will be concentrating on green programmes and introducing a complaint management system to monitor all the residents’ feedback and complaints with, hopefully, the collaboration of the Petaling Jaya City Council and the police.”

Held for the eighth consecutive year, the city council aims to encourage RAs and Rukun Tetangga groups to carry out initiatives towards a sustainable community.

The previous best neighbourhood winner was the Damansara Jaya Residents’ Association.
