MORE than 400 residents of Damansara Damai and its neighbouring areas participated in the PJ Green Ride Event recently. The event, organised by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), saw participants raring to ride their bikes as early as 7.30am at the Urban Park (1) nearby.
The event was officiated by mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman.
The green ride, covering a distance of 5.6km to Urban Park (2), was flagged off at about 9.30am.
There were also several activities lined up for the participants such as aerobics, tagging of trees at Urban Park (2) as well as a Green Hunt and lucky draw.
Sarinah Abdul Rahman, 47, a participant, said the Go Green event helped to unite the community.
“The residents barely know their neighbours, and this event will help to get the community to come together,” said Sarinah.
Sathiya Sellan, 38, who was there with his mother, said residents should take part in the event as it encouraged a healthier community.
“No matter what’s your age and background, it is good to do something productive during the weekends,” said Sathiya.
At the event, the mayor also announced the Special Area Plan which creates an inter-connected network of cycling lanes in PJ.
“This ‘PJ City Cycleways’ will ensure the safety of the cyclists,” said Roslan.
He also announced that the council has allocated RM500,000 for the Damansara Damai Cycleways project.
“PJ City Cycleways will take five years to be developed according to plan,” he said.
“Besides having this network, we will also provide some space for recreational and social activity using the pedestrian walkways.”
Roslan also announced that the council will be upgrading all the urban parks.
“Urban Park (1) will be designated as Family Park, while Urban Park (2) will be upgraded to Extreme Sports Park.
“The Urban Park (3) will be designated as Kid’s Zone and Urban Park (4) will be Youth Park.
“Forty-five acres of Urban Park in Damansara Damai was gazetted as the ‘Green Zone’ after it was handed over by MK Holding Bhd to the council,” said Roslan.
Also present were MK Holding Bhd chairman Datuk Mustapha Kamal and Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong.
Actors Arash Mohd and Fizo Omar were among the celebrities there to entertain the crowd.
